On May 3, as part of a quarterly update to the Medicare Claims Processing Manual, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced retroactive changes to the underlying physician payment calculations for a number of procedures. Specifically, CMS adjusted the malpractice relative value unit (RVU) which is one of three components considered when calculating Medicare physician payments (the others being work and practice expenses). What's Doctor Burnout Costing America?

Doctor burnout is costing the U.S. health care system a lot — roughly $4.6 billion a year, according to a study published this week in the Annals of Internal Medicine. "Everybody who goes into medicine knows that it's a stressful career and that it's a lot of hard work," says Lotte Dyrbye, a physician and professor of medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., who co-authored the study.

Hospital Gets Green Light on Surgery Center

Providence St. Mary Medical Center's certificate of need to open a freestanding ambulatory surgery center at the Providence Southgate Medical Park on Second Avenue was approved Wednesday by the Washington State Department of Health. The Providence Ambulatory Surgery Center’s goal is to open next year at the park – which is located in the surgical department of the former Walla Walla General Hospital.

Quest, LabCorp Report Billing Data Breach Compromising Nearly 20M Patients

Quest Diagnostics, one of the world's largest blood testing companies, has reported that a cybersecurity breach at its debt collection agency may have revealed the personal and medical information of nearly 12 million of its customers over a period of eight months. In a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Quest said it was first informed in mid-May of potential unauthorized activity on the web payment page hosted by the American Medical Collection Agency, its collections service provider.
